OBITUARY: THE DEATH OF MR. FEELGOOD

The death has been reported of “Mr Feelgood” after a long debilitating illness. He finally passed away last week, losing the will to live after reading the latest IMF assessment on the UK economy.

My Feelgood leaves a welfare state, extensive universal benefit commitments, an abandoned home and colossal debts.

It is thought an enfeebled annuity and relentlessly rising energy bills drained him of the last vestiges of hope.

At last! Inverted commas now come with “free”

I did not have many stylistic peccadillos in my period as Executive Editor of The Scotsman. But there was one rule for which I was a stickler and which I battled to enforce.

This was that, with such phrases as free prescriptions, or free personal care or free bus passes, always to put inverted commas around the word “free”.

Say ‘Yes!’ TO START-UP SCOTLAND!

An Open letter to Scot-Buzz readers from the Editor...

Now is the time to launch a great campaign that everyone can rally round.

It’s time to launch Start-Up Scotland.

Our lead story today is on the visit of the Start-Up Business campaign bus to Scotland next month.

WHY DO THEY NEVER MENTION THE D-WORDS?

Another budget at Holyrood and another bout of shadow boxing between Labour and the SNP.

“This is a budget for jobs and growth” declares John Swinney. “No, it’s not!” “Oh, yes it is!”

John Swinney wrings his hands. Labour accuses him of crocodile tears, or worse – being in tandem with the Tories.

Can there be a more terrible accusation in Scotland today than to be accused of being in cahoots with the Tories?

GREEN SHOOTS: DARE WE HOPE?

Better news on construction… continuing fall in jobless and rise in numbers employed across the UK… a sharp drop in the trade deficit… Might we be seeing, sprouting from the scorched earth of the UK economy, the first green shoots of recovery?

Cue ribald laughter and cynical hoots of derision from the bien pensants and the policy elite.

TIME FOR HOUSING TO MOVE CENTRE-STAGE

Pressure is growing for a major initiative to spur the house building sector.Housing offers the quickest form of construction stimulus to help revive the economy. And support is badly needed. Home completion targets both north and south of the border are being woefully missed.I expect a joint announcement from the Scottish government and Homes for Scotland in the next couple of days.
