This is 2016 not 1980 any more, she writes. “With the explosion of online retailing business rates has become one of the most obscene and out of date taxes currently enforced in the UK. Retailers big and small are disappearing off our high street.

“The time is right for a complete and radical change to encourage towns and cities to thrive, create employment, create communities and let retailers do what we do best.

“I want retailers big and small to join me and force radical change that for once sees the value of a business who still wants a bricks and mortar store where people can leave their homes and shop in a non-virtual world.”
